It had been years since I rode a bike.  Of course, as the timeless saying suggests, I had not forgotten.  Accompanying six attendees of the Pennsylvania Bus Association, I made my first tracks at Pocono Whitewater's outfit in White Haven.  Within minutes I was channeling my inner child, squeezing the brakes hard and skidding to a crowd-pleasing stop.  Well - maybe not crowd-pleasing - but I sure enjoyed it.

In fact, I enjoyed everything about that ride.  The great architecture of both man and nature was on display and we stopped several times to look at pieces of history still intact.  We saw old railroad abutments and bridge foundations.  Several waterfalls led to stops along our way, as pictures were taken.  Nobody else seemed to care that several mayflies were buzzing around.  I kept thinking to myself, "How can I get back here to fish?"  As I reached for another bug I noticed some new bright colors down on the water.  The reds and blues belonged to rafts, eight of them to be exact.  Both we and the rafters were cruising down to Rockport, different methods of transportation, same fun.

Our Rail-Trail was not stressful.  It wasn't difficult and I wouldn't use the word adrenaline to describe it.  It was simply a way to be surrounded by nature and get some exercise while getting to know some great people.  I don't want to speak for any of the other riders – but I sure enjoyed it.

As most anglers know, fishing with your father is a different game entirely.  You literally could not care less about your catch rate.  Your success is 100% contingent on his success.  It's as if you wish to pay him back for showing you the ropes "back in the day".  And so, my father, our friend and I eased into Bushkill Creek last weekend.

Now, this is a beautiful stream.  Its water is tinted brown, giving it a Canadian river-like feel.  Birds are always swooping back and forth, inhaling helpless aquatic insects that only see a few seconds of flight.  On this day, like most on the Bushkill, fish are rising.  "Are those blue-winged olives?"  I ask as the three of us lean forward from the bank and squint our eyes.  Tiny mayflies are fighting a light breeze about 20 feet above the creek.  Then it hits me.  Perhaps if I stand in the water and watch what floats by, I'll be able to determine what the trout a few yards upstream are eating.  Voila!  This kind of logic is as basic as it gets but is often forgotten by anglers.  I immediately recognize the miniature mayflies as tricos.  Size 20 will do.

We spend the next hour casting to fish whose options are in the thousands.  I offer some condolences regarding our lack of success, "With so many bugs on the water," I shout, "it's tough to get them to eat ours."  Let it be known that nothing humbles a fly angler's casting ability like trying to lay out a size 20 trico in a slow-moving pool.  A few casts receive attention and maybe even a rise but there are no hookups.

We weren't on our game that day and, consequently, we didn't catch any fish.  You almost have to be flawless in conditions like that.  But it didn't matter.  It was three friends spending time together, fishing a beautiful stream, with nobody else around.  And that, to me, is worth more than any fish.
