Villages, historic buildings, remnants of a once-busy canal, the nation's oldest existing wire cable suspension bridge and home of author ZaneGrey are some of the river valley's sights. Part of the Anthracite coal region,the Upper Delaware River Region was strategic for transporting coal from the area by rail and canal to southern states.
